Dick’s Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 by 18-year-old Dick Stack. Dick, who was employed at an Army surplus store, was approached one day by the storeowner. The owner wanted the young man’s opinion on what it would take to set up a fishing supply store. Dick, who was an avid angler, was more than happy to answer the storeowner. He promptly wrote a list of what he thought was necessary. Upon reading the list, the storeowner insulted Dick by saying that he was stupid and that he had no idea what he was talking about. The angry Dick immediately quit his job and went to his grandmother’s house, where he confided to her what had taken place. “How much will it cost to set up the store?” she asked him. Dick replied that it would cost around 600 dollars. The grandmother went to the jar where she kept her lifesavings and counted out 600 dollars. She handed the money to her grandson and told him, “Go build that store yourself.” Dick Stack did.
Dick’s Sporting Goods has gone from selling only fishing goods to selling sporting goods, footwear, and apparel of all types. Dick’s son, Ed Stack, is the current CEO and a part owner of the Dick’s Sporting Goods chain. Ed and his siblings bought the store from their father and expanded two stores to a 500-store chain. Dick’s Sporting Goods is now a nation-wide supplier of sporting goods of every description.
